Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon

Om een zeer kleurrijk festival mee te maken reizen we vandaag naar Lucban. Ze hebben daar een wedstrijd voor het beste versierde huis en de inwoners halen alles uit de kast om te winnen. De typische versieringen van dit stadje bestaan uit de kleurrijke "kiping" en diverse tropische vruchten en groenten. Kiping is gemaakt uit gemalen rijst gemengd met kleurstof. De koffiebladeren worden daarna met rijstpasta ingesmeerd, gestoomd en vervolgens gedroogt.

Op 15 mei 2009 reisden wij om 05.15 uur met de auto naar Lucban. Een lange file is een jaarlijks terugkerend fenomeen tijdens dit festival. Daarom zorgen wij ervoor dat wij op tijd naar Sariaya teruggaan om deze verkeersdrukte voor te zijn en zo ook het Agawan festival later in de middag te kunnen bij wonen. Wij hebben de auto 1 kilometer buiten het stadje geparkeerd voorbij Kamay ni Hesus. Vanaf hier kost een tricycle 10 pesos per persoon enkele reis.

Toen wij in Lucban arriveerden, zagen wij dat sommige bewoners nog bezig waren met de voorbereidingen terwijl anderen al klaar waren. Wat prachtig! Het stadje is zo kleurrijk en levendig geworden. Veel bewoners poseren trots in de raamopeningen. Na twee uur te hebben rondgekeken en de diverse versieringen te hebben bewonderd en gefotografeerd gingen wij terug naar Sariaya. Maar dit pas nadat wij de "pansit habhab" (een populairr locale bami) met een scheutje hete cocosazijn hebben gegeten. De prijs is 8 pesos per bananablaadje. Habhab is een speciale manier van het eten van de bami zonder gebruik van vork of handen. Je brengt je mond gewoon naar de pancit op het bananenblad en hap hap. Een tricycle bracht ons terug naar de parkeerplek. Tegen 10.00 uur waren wij in Sariaya terug, ruim op tijd voor de festivitieiten in de middag.

Regarding colorful decorations, there's no doubt that we have to go to Lucban. They have a contest for the most decorative house and the residents think of creative ways to have the chance of winning. The typical decor in this town are the colorful "kiping" and tropical fruits and vegetables. Kiping is made of pounded rice mixed with food colors. The rice paste is then spread out in the coffie leaves, steamed and dried.

On May 15 we went by car to Lucban. It is a common knowledge that this festivity causes heavy traffic. We had to come back to Sariaya on time so that we could attend the Agawan festival in the afternoon there. We parked the car 1 kilometer away from teh town proper so that we could easily go back. This is after we passed Kamay ni Hesus. A tricycle costs 10 pesos per person one-way.

After we arrived in Lucban, we noticed that some residents are still busy with the preparation while others were already finished. How splendid! The town is very colorful and alive. After roaming around for almost two hours, we decided to go back to Sariaya. We did this after eating "pansit habhab" (a local noodle) sprinkled with coconut vinegar. YThe price is 8 pesos per banana leaf. Habhab is a way of eating pansit withut fork. You place the pansit in your mouth. Afterwards we took a tricycle in going back to the parking space. At around 10:00 am we were back in Sariaya in time for the celebration in the afternoon.
